Qurbani or Udhiyah is the act of offering an animal as a sacrifice to Allah (SWT) on Eid ul-Adha. We perform Qurbani for the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and to follow the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was willing to sacrifice his own son in the name of Allah (SWT).
It says in the Quran:
‘We have decreed the animal offerings for you among the rites of God. In them there are benefits for you. So, mention God’s name on them while they are lined up, then, once they collapse on their sides, you shall eat therefrom and feed the poor and the needy.’ (22:36)
Many Muslims consider Qurbani to be Fard. In fact, the four Islamic schools of thought state that Qurbani is either Wajib (compulsory) or Sunnah Mu’akkada (a confirmed and highly recommended Sunnah).
Ideally, the meat from Qurbani should be divided into three equal parts: one part to be given to the poor and the needy; one part for relatives and friends; and one part to be kept by the person offering the Qurbani. Nowadays, most people prefer to donate the entirety of their Qurbani to the poor.
The Qurbani sacrifice must take place after the Eid prayer, on Eid ul-Adha, any time between the 10th and the 12th day of Dhul Hijjah. Any sacrifice performed before Eid prayer will only count as Sadaqah, which means you still haven’t fulfilled your Qurbani obligation.
Qurbani involves offering in sacrifice beasts of cattle (sheep, goats, cows, camels etc.) for the sake of Allah (SWT). One Qurbani is equal to either a small animal, like a goat, or a share in a large animal, such as a cow. Both are equally rewarded and ensure you have completed your obligation.
The tradition of offering Qurbani predates Islam. It comes to us from the time of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) who was commanded in his dreams to sacrifice his son, Ismail (AS) for the sake of Allah (SWT). When both father and son passed this test of their devotion, Allah (SWT) sent the Angel Jibreel (AS) with a ram from heaven to be sacrificed in place of Ismail (AS).
