Entire villages across Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman and Nuristan have been flattened. Homes, schools, and clinics lie in ruins. Thousands are displaced, sleeping under open skies with no food, clean water, or medical care. Rescue efforts are racing against time, hindered by landslides and roads made impassable.

The Situation

In the dead of night on the 1st of September 2025, disaster struck without warning. A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake ripped through eastern Afghanistan, centred in the remote district of Nurgal in Kunar Province. Entire villages were destroyed in seconds. Families were crushed beneath their homes. Survivors were left clawing through rubble with their bare hands, crying out for loved ones still buried beneath the debris.

Over 2,000 lives have been lost, more than 5,000 are injured, over 5,420 homes destroyed and thousands remain unaccounted for. With infrastructure destroyed and roads buried by landslides, many communities remain entirely cut off. Food, water, and medical supplies are running out.

This is not just another earthquake, it is one of the deadliest disasters in the region’s recent history, and it comes as Afghans already endure a severe humanitarian crisis. Families were already struggling with poverty, food insecurity, and lack of healthcare. This quake has pushed them to the brink.

Winter is approaching, and thousands are exposed to the elements without shelter, blankets, or warm clothing. Every passing hour deepens their suffering.
