The reality facing Afghan widows
More than 2.5 million women in Afghanistan are widowed, many having lost not only their husbands, but their homes, livelihoods, and access to education.
With limited opportunities to earn an income, widows often face impossible choices. Some are forced to send their children to work, others rely on begging or unsafe labour simply to survive. Emotional trauma, isolation, and poverty compound the daily struggle.
Every mother deserves the chance to provide for her children with dignity.

Widow sponsorship meets urgent needs while laying the foundation for long-term recovery. Through consistent support, women are able to stabilise their households, care for their children, and begin rebuilding their lives.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The one who strives to provide for the widow and the needy is like the one who fasts during the day and prays throughout the night.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Real lives, real change
Hadia, a 42-year-old widow from Herat, became the sole caregiver for her three children after losing her husband to illness. With no income and little support, she was forced to beg on the streets to feed her family.
Through Aryana Aid’s Widow Family Sponsorship Programme, Hadia began receiving monthly household support, including food and essential supplies. With this stability, she can now provide regular meals, keep her children in school, and rebuild a sense of safety and hope for her family.
Hadia’s journey reflects what sustained care can achieve when widows are supported with dignity.
